Welcome to TRV! 🙂 I’m so happy you’re here.
Do you struggle with decorating your home on a tight budget? Do you think you can’t have a home that you love because you don’t have much money to spend?
I believe there’s no can’t in decorating… there’s only endless creative potential.
With just a little bit of money and a whole lot of repurposing, reusing, and rethinking you can create a home that smiles with a budget that makes you happy. It’s totally possible!
No matter where I’ve lived I’ve always had to deal with an almost non-existent decorating budget because other things always came first, like the everyday bills of real life, but that has never stopped me from creating homes that I eventually loved.
And it doesn’t have to stop you either… no matter how small your budget.
How do you do this?
By changing the way you see things so you can start turning negatives into positives.
By giving yourself permission to creatively express your one-of-a-kind self, rather than following trends you’re not even sure you love because they’re popular.
And by re-imagining the home you’re in instead of wishing you were somewhere else… in that pie-in-the-sky perfect dream house that you may never find.
I know what all that’s like because I’ve been there, but don’t let that imaginary house of your dreams stop you from creating the real home of your heart.
Years ago, after my husband John and I bought our first house, a very modest 2 bedroom 1 ½ storey, I wasn’t very happy with it at all. I felt decoratively inadequate, and was always comparing our little house to what I saw in decor magazines and on decorating shows. Our house didn’t look like any of those houses, and it bothered me.
I was having trouble even starting to decorate because I was afraid of doing something wrong.
Thankfully one day I had an epiphany, and I realized that our house wasn’t supposed to look like any of those houses because they belonged to someone else. It was ok, and actually so much better, if our house looked like it belonged to us. Right then and there I decided to embrace our little house, imperfections and all, and I started doing my own decorative thing.
I discovered there’s no wrong in decorating… there’s only what feels right to you.
That’s when I created my first real home.
I no longer think about not having the very best and I enjoy making the very best of what I have… and you can too.
I’ve been doing my own DIY decorating for many years now, and I’ve learned a lot along the way, but I’m still learning… always. After all, isn’t life just one big DIY project? We learn as we go and we do the best we can. Life’s too short to worry about perfection.
Honestly we’ve never bought a perfect house that I’ve completely loved when we moved in, and quite frankly I don’t believe it exists. What I have fallen in love with is the potential for a house to become a home… and that can be any house, any size, any style, any budget.
If you can’t be in the house you love, then love the home you’re in.
You can start right now… no matter where you’re living… an apartment, a bungalow, or a century old yellow brick farmhouse like my current home where I live with my husband John and 4 feline friends… Leo, Salty, Monkey, and Pixie.
TRV is all about repurposing thrifted finds, reusing and upcycling what we already have, and rethinking everything to do with diy decorating. My hope is that I can help you create a home that you love by decorating the way you want to, not the way the decor powers-that-be say you should.
In my world there’s no should in decorating… there’s only what makes your heart happy.
I know what it’s like to over think and second guess, but don’t let your head stop you from following your heart. I know that’s not always easy. After all these years sometimes I still have to tell my head to be quiet so I can do what my heart knows is right for me.
It’s not about keeping up with friends and neighbours, or celebrity decorators and decor magazines. It’s all about you, what you love, and what brings you joy. 🙂
The majority of project ideas on TRV can easily be changed up and customized so you can make them your own. I don’t expect you to do exactly what I do, but I hope you’ll be inspired to be free with the colours you love, go crazy with a fabric that tickles your fancy, and do whatever your heart desires to create a home uniquely your own.
