It seems that I’m finding unusual things lately, or I’ve just become more attracted to them.
No… I don’t think that’s it. I’ve always been attracted to things that I’ve never seen before.
But I’m happy to say that in the case of this handmade vintage embroidered floral and foliate piece it’s good.
It’s about 18″ from top to bottom, including the stem.
They jump right out at me quite brazenly, and easily convince me to take them home.
My research tells me that this is a Hungarian Kalocsa doily tablecloth, but it’s such an odd shape I’m really not so sure about that.
It was probably made somewhere in the 60s or 70s.
If it was put on a table it should certainly be left without anything on it.
It’s really too beautiful to cover up.
Kalocsa embroidery is inspired by images from nature, and tends to be very colourful.
All the details in this piece are quite amazing.
I found a lot of smaller Kalocsa doilies a while back.
I think just about every colour of the rainbow is in this piece, and it all works together beautifully.
The hours of work put into this piece totally boggles my mind.
In this house of four felines it wouldn’t last long on a table, so I think I may have to figure out a way to frame it.
Thanks so much for reading and until next time…
