This past weekend I finally gave my kitchen chairs a much needed and long awaited makeover. It’s been way too hot lately to worry about doing anything more than what’s necessary in the gardens, so for the time being I have some time to work on some inside projects.
Here is an after of the armchair.
If you want to tackle a redo like this here are the tools you’ll need. A hammer, scissors, screwdrivers, pliers, and staple gun. And of course the paint of your choice. I used Krylon, Burgundy. It requires no sanding or priming and goes on like a dream if you use thin coats (I did 3) and it dries quickly between coats (about 15 minutes).
Here is the before of all 4 chairs. The armchair on the right is the original fabric that came on the chairs when they were given to us about 10 years ago. A few years ago I recovered the other 3 seats with some fabric from a thrift store curtain because the original fabric was in bad shape. I ran out of curtain before I could do the armchair. And they’ve been like that ever since. Sad I know, but that’s life sometimes.
Here are the chairs with the table, which will be done in a later post. The armchair isn’t in the pic because I didn’t think about taking this photo until after the armchair was already painted.
So, first I remove the screws from under the chair to remove the seat.
Here’s the chair without the seat.
Here’s the chair with 3 coats of a lovely burgundy. No sanding or priming was required. All I did was make sure they were nice and clean.
Here’s the fabric I’m using. I bought it off ebay a few years ago. The original padding was in excellent condition so I reused it.
I staple the middle of each side first, pulling the fabric just tight enough so it’s taut.
Then I make my way to the corners pulling tight and stapling as I go. When I get to a corner I pull the fabric in on one side and fold the other side over that to make it as neat as I can and I staple several times to keep in place.
And my chair is done. It’s that simple. It’s a little time consuming but anyone can do it. It’s well worth the effort. Finally after all these years. Yay!! Only 3 more to go.
So you don’t have to scroll all the way up the page, here’s the before again of all 4 chairs.
And here’s the after.
I absolutely love them and I’m so glad they’re finally done. What do you think?
Next it’s on to the table. My hubby wants me do the whole table in the same burgundy, but I’m not sure. That’s a lot of spray paint and I’ve never spray painted a table before. I was thinking of just painting the legs because we have a tablecloth on it most of the time. Should I go burgundry? Maybe cream or green? All these colours are in the fabric. I’ll have to think about it. Any suggestions?
